How to show expression with the mouth!

This was a request and at first I wasn’t sure if I had anything to provide with, but as it turn out it got a little longer than I expected because there were actually things I had to say!! Wow!!

Anyway, this is some guidelines I follow when I try to make the face expressfull, more specifically the mouth! It is often neglected, since it’s actually pretty hard, I’ll admit. But I’m here to help (hopefully…)! A mouth expression tutorial as per request. Enjoy and hopefully it will help some a little. ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

Draw the teeth at the right angle.

This is super important. The upper jaw follows the angle of the head, and the lower jaw will depend on how open it is. Make sure you have a rough estimate of where the teeth are, and how much of them you’re going to see!

The lips will VERY roughly follow the same angle as the teeth. It really depends on the character, but it gives you a sense at least.

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

If you DON’T do this, you’re going to lose so much volume and the mouth is going to end up looking unrelatable. I showed this example in this tutorial:

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

It’s not just the lips!

The cheeks, chin, and tongue play a role too!

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

Try look at your own mouth or references! I have a very pliable and large mouth, so that’s one reason why my characters have it too lmao.

ASYMMETRYYYYY (ง ͠° ͟ل͜ ͡°)ง

I cannot emphasize how important asymmetry is when drawing expressions. It applies not only to the eyebrows to achieve the Dreamwork Face™, but also the mouth. Seriously if you draw a symmetric mouth I will deliver myself to your mailbox and then shout at you until you fix it.

Look at the difference between these two for example: which one has more “life”?

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

I think you get the idea.

Push and squish - give it flow

Here’s an old drawing I have but it illustrates how I think when I squish the mouth, and use folding and wrinkles to my advantage.

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

Look at your own face and see where skin bundles up, where it creases the most and when bumps appear on your chin. Subtle details makes all the difference!

One VERY effective detail is illustrated in the first sketch, where I pull upwards on one side, and downwards on the other. That’s a good detail to use when the character is making a skewed expression, or is extremely frustrated. I encourage you to play around with that concept bc it’s ~super effective~!

EXAMPLES:

Happy: Your entire mouth is pushed upwards, not just the corners of your mouth!

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

I tend to draw a :3 mouth bc I’ve been drawing Lance too much….. You don’t have to but it’s basically imprinted in my motor memory by now.

Pouting/frowning: corners are pushed down, middle pushed slightly up. Sometimes, there’s a slight dip in the middle too. It can give a sense that the character is biting their lips.

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

Showing frustration/intimidating/is intimidated: basically showing a lot of teeth. The corners are as open as possible and the middle sorta more squished. An extremely important detail here is showing some of the gums, and open space between the cheeks and teeth. That way it looks like the mouth it open to it’s full potential. Here is also where you basically MUST add folds and bumps, or else it’s not going to look relatable.

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

(Here I am again with the pulling upwards on one side and downwards on the other, as illustrated on the last sketch)

And then again, here’s just another doodle showing how important it is to show the gums. It’s the same face twice, but the second one looks slightly more frustrated doesn’t it?

How To Show Expression With The Mouth!

(from my other tutorial on how to draw facial expressions)

As you can see, this last one is very versatile and I draw it a lot. Play around with the basic shape and see how much subtle details makes a lot of difference!

That’s it!

I hope that cleared some things up and was somewhat helpful! Enjoy drawing ✨

How to other eye

ALRIGHT, so, I know a lot of people have trouble making eyes match. Yesterday I found out a way to make it significantly easier! Here’s a small guide.

image

Well, first of all, you have your face. mark where the eyes should be on it.

image

Then mark the corners of the eyes and go over the middle again, to make the next step easier

image

Alright, I know it sounds a bit crazy, but draw this shape, trying to make it as symmetrical as you can.

image

Draw the eyes using that shape as a guide and TA-DA! They match! For different eye shapes you tweak the angle of the two guide lines.

image

And it also helps with angles where the size and shape of the eye is distorted, you just put it in perspective.

image

I think the theory behind it is that the thing that makes it hard to make the eyes match is the angle of the corners, and this type of guideline helps make them even, which makes the eyes look symmetrical. Welp, here it is! I hope it helps someone!

Artist Resource: Bodies in Motion

I came across this site that (if you subscribe) offers high-res  frame by frame photos of people jumping, flipping, kicking, dancing, etc, so you can easily analyze each position the body goes through to complete each movement. I think this can be an excellent resource for gesture drawing and reference for all manner of artmaking. It is $49 a year for the basic plan, and that gets you access to the high-res photos and a few other features.

you're really good at painting clothes so! i was wondering if its not too much to ask, if you could do some quick tips/tricks or a short tutorial!! thank u and god bless

Aaah thank you! Well, first things first; learn from reference! You can google fabric reference or even just outfits and pay attention to the way the fabric swoops and curls around the form that its surrounding.

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

Here the fabric sweeps downwards, but comes up at a much tighter, sharper angle into his hand and bunches up within his palm. The material layers overtop of each other

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

This fabric is very loose and shimmery, and within the overlapping folds your shadows will be most prevalent to give it dimension of being layered.

Even with skin tight fabric there will always be creased, wrinkles, and layers where the material is pushed together. It is important to capture that! Whether the fabric is tight, or very loose. The tighter, the less wrinkle typically if it is pulled taught, while looser fabric will have more swooping lines of flow and tend to be thickly “banded” with spread out areas.

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

here is our mannequin torso for the purpose of visualization of the render process!

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

I start with the basic shape of what I want my clothes to be, and then i go from there to decide which way my fabric will be sweeping

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

now I block in colors, I always use a middle tone of the shade i want instead of the pure shade that I’m aiming for. The shade I’m aiming for I will use as a highlight to be where my lightsource is casting

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

I typically merge down at this point as I prefer to paint on one layer, and i start to blend and loosely figure out the way i’m going to further express the drape of my fabric

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

I refine and increase my brightness and darkness according to what i feel is needed to achieve my chosen contrast

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

refine, blend, and adjust as you need and to your personal preference!

You're Really Good At Painting Clothes So! I Was Wondering If Its Not Too Much To Ask, If You Could Do

that is how i usually go about painting fabric

make a new tumblr

install this theme https://www.tumblr.com/theme/37061

post comics as you would on any other tumblr they show up on their own webcomic site

what if nobody sees my webcomic :(

too bad you got to draw your OCs making out and nobody can appreciate your artistic genius obviously the world is not ready for this webcomic genius

Anonymous said: Your art is so natural and expressive, I love it! I was wondering how you go about cuddles?? Or just fitting two people together so it’s not awkward or stiff looking, it’s something I’ve struggled with but look to your art to see how you solve it. I was wondering about your thought process when organizing a drawing like that (I hope the English is okay!)

Thanks! ^^ When I read your first question I thought you’re asking about real cuddles :’) Anyway, this is how I go about it, sometimes I alredy have a pose in mind, but then it’s just trying until I get it right. Sometimes I use references. But this technique is really relaxing, I love to draw this way :D Hope it helps!
