Illustrated Story

I’m working on a special project over the next three months. I’ll be turning a short story of mine into an illustrated novella.

My goal is to combine my talents in illustration, writing, and design to create an expressive reading experience. I want there to be unity between art and text. 

The main challenge will be to make the artwork useful for storytelling and to make it subdued enough to direct the reader's eyes around the page while minimizing distraction or interrupting their reading flow.

Here are a couple examples, with very different styles. 

I’ll be exploring the artistic direction and the story more in my next post.

Book Cover Challenge

My goal is to make ten unique book covers over the next few months using a variety of techniques. Here’s some of the elements and styles I want to cover (no pun intended).

Symbolism

The Children’s Home is a book a modern day fairy tale involving disfigured boy and and the mysterious, magical events that happen as more children join him in his sprawling estate. This cover does a great job showing the magic of the story and piquing the readers’ interest.

Typography

Being creative with typography can sometimes be a challenge for me. I want to exercise my typographic muscles by doing a few covers that focus on hand-drawn or modified type.

Retro/Vintage

I love vintage sci-fi book covers. Some of them, like this vintage Isaac Asimov book, have a timeless style that I’d like to capture.

Fun Photoshop

Using photo editing to create a strange and wonderful cover like this one of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian that captures the essence of the story.
