Character who does objectively good things and is on the side of good but is still an objectively terrible person
Gruff loner parent who adopts other characters and care about them deeply in their own way and it's really heartwarmingly obvious but they will never actually say it
Absolutely feral rough and tumble fighter who is misunderstood as a troublemaker, gets mad when their friends are hurt and will sacrifice themselves at the drop of a hat but would never admit it
At some point had big protagonist energy but all their friends are dead or gone and are just trying their hardest after getting in over their head but still wanting to do good in the world
Gods who literally couldn't give two shits about your problems and what humans these days are up to
Someone who has escaped a terrible situation and hated the person they were when they were in said situation and is trying to be better but has terrible self-worth and succumbs to the power of friendship™ and a well written recovery arc
Prick "I know more than you" academics who are snarky and absolute smug little shits especially to the antagonists but have a heart of gold
Antagonist that everyone but the person they "work for" knows is the one who's really in charge
Character who can and will easily kill you in 101 ways with their bare hands but will feel bad about it afterwards (bonus points if PTSD and their personality is absolute baby) That one shapeshifter who's just here to have fun, cause some chaos and prank everyone
That one shapeshifter who can transform into one (1) thing and that one thing is an absolutely fucking terrifying beast of some kind when they go Apeshit
Flirty pretty femme boy or girl who probably doesn't care about gender at all so long as they get to look fabulous and tease people they think are cute
A group of 'orphans' who findfamily in each other (feat. Intimidating but objectively good parent who has unofficially adopted everyone, older sibling child trying to take care of everyone, the chaotic dumbass, the innocent bean, the one who's having none of their bullshit, etc.)
Amnesiacs who are just trying to move on with their lives and turn over a new leaf and are honestly terrified of finding out the truth of who they were in the past
discourse about redemption arcs would vastly improve if instead of always asking “is this character redeemable?” people started asking “what message would it send to redeem this character?” and “would it be logical or satisfying on a narrative level to redeem this character?”

I really hate the concept of “little t trauma”. Hate it.
“Big T Trauma”, the logic goes, is for things that are “actually bad enough’, like war veterans or rape survivors. Or people who survive natural disasters or terrorist attacks or car accidents.* “Little t trauma” is said to be for things like “interpersonal conflict”, infidelity, divorce, “financial worries or difficulty”, “legal trouble”, “death of a pet”, “bullying or harassment”, “loss of significant relationships”, or emotional abuse.*
And it’s bullshit.
*Examples taken from various articles on the subject I just looked up in preparation for this rant.
Plenty of people survive car accidents and sexual assault and war without lasting mental health issues.
The perceived severity of the traumatic event doesn’t actually matter. What matters is how your brain reacted to it.
You can have PTSD or other serious traumagenic disorders from bullying at school, or “just” emotional abuse, or neglect, or just from not having your needs met. If you’re marinating in stress long enough, it causes SO MANY problems.
Poverty is extremely traumatic! Your brain doesn’t necessarily understand the difference between “someone is routinely causing me serious physical harm” and “we run out of money for food by the third week of the month”. It just knows to interpret these things as threats to your continued survival. They cause you to produce stress hormones and other physiological responses. I’ve probably known people who have severe, ongoing issues due to just about everything on that list!
Your brain is trying to make sure you don’t die, and all the fucking logic in the world about “Well I wasn’t ACTUALLY in danger” or “Well she wouldn’t really have hit me” or “it was just kids being kids” doesn’t change that.
Every single trauma survivor I’ve ever known has thought that what happened to them Wasn’t Bad Enough to Count, because Other People Have it Worse. Every single one.
I think we’re so close to starting to realize that, as it turns out, a whole metric FUCKTON of people have experienced traumatic events and it’s affected a LOT more people than we initially believed. We’ve started to understand that it’s not just war vets who get PTSD.
But it’s like we’re desperate to come up with a reason that no, actually, it’s not that the systems we have in place routinely damage people severely - or that a lot of very common parenting techniques cause serious harm. We have to subdivide it further into little categories, and you should stop being so dramatic. OBVIOUSLY it that wasn’t bad enough. To be clear, I understand that this terminology was PROBABLY well-intentioned. “Look, a whole host of experiences can be trauma! We should acknowledge that!” - or at least I hope it was. But it’s that implied “[but obviously it’s not as bad as the people who have REAL problems. Don’t you know some people had to deal with TERRORISM!?]” that makes it bullshit.
People who are really struggling with awful, serious things already have enough trouble being taken seriously and taking their own pain seriously.
This concludes your irregularly scheduled rant about how mental health is discussed.
This is 5 days too late, but I felt like re-drawing my half-thrown together Halloween costume because I really needed an excuse to draw something spoopy.
Can you tell I love old timey ghost stories?
Neither have you, just saying
Mark Zuckerberg has never proven he’s not a lizard person

This reply means the world to me. Regardless of where you’re from, or what’s happening in your country, you matter. Your struggles matter, even if they don’t feel large enough or aren’t getting any international media attention.
This post isn’t just for Americans, or Australians, or Palestinians or people living in the UK. It’s for everyone, who just needs a little reminder that there is reason to hope, and that reason can manifest in a thousand tiny ways.
A PSA from my D&D Characters in light of the recent election.
I don't live in America, but like so many others we are feeling the ramifications of what happened and how much the right's hate has emboldened facsism and hate across the world.
I can't do much alone and I don't intend to, but hopefully myself and my art can help you find just a bit of hope. Enough, at least, to take care of yourselves and eachother, and enough to find the strength to keep fighting for a brighter future.
Please remember that in a system that wants you gone, caring for yourself and eachother is a form of rebellion they will never be able to take away from us.
We will survive this.
so fond of characters who haunt their stories, who exist without actually existing at all. when a character is long gone, but persists in the actions and words of all the characters they have left behind. when everything to come unfolds because of them. when they are both dead and the beating heart at the very center of the narrative... that’s the stuff 💗__💗
Sometimes i draw shit, sometimes i write shit, sometimes both at the same time.♠ Aro/Ace, (They/Them), Chaotic Good Disaster, definitely a human person
