Post-01x09, Daredevil: Born Again

Frank knocks once, just once, then steps back and glances down the dim, too-quiet hallway. The place is clean and seems safe enough, but it’s not the kind of hotel that has heightened security or anyone who’d notice if something went sideways. Good thing he’s there.

He braces one hand on the doorframe and ducks his head, his other hand curling around his ribs. Something’s cracked in there, for sure, courtesy of those sorry fucking excuses for cops. Bunch of dumbass fanboys. And he’ll deal with them. Soon. But first Frank needs to see Karen. He has things to get off his chest. 

“Karen, it’s me,” he says, his voice rough but quiet. “Open up. Please?”

The lock clicks almost immediately, and the door opens. She’s standing there barefoot, in jeans and a worn Columbia crewneck sweatshirt, her blonde hair still damp from the shower and twisted into a loose bun at the top of her head. 

Her eyes sweep over him, cataloging every cut and bruise that hadn’t been there the day before. They linger on his face, on his left eye that’s purple and swollen.

“You look like shit,” she says, pushing the door wide and stepping back to let him in. There’s no heat behind the words, just a thread of worry and exhaustion. “Been busy?”

Frank huffs a breath, almost laughing because, that’s the understatement of the fucking century. “Yeah, somethin’ like that.” 

Karen turns on her heel and pads back into the room, leaving him to follow. It’s as close to an invitation as he’s going to get. He steps inside, locking the door behind him, and follows her to where she’s sitting on the edge of the bed, sinking down beside her. His body aches from the inside out, but the mattress dips under their weight, and he relaxes — just a little — for the first time since he answered the phone to find her on the other end.

Still kinda crazy how kastle is this completely unplanned ship that was brought to life by the chemistry of Jon and Deb, and became so popular to where it's now in a love triangle with the comicbook canon ship. That's insane. And how? Before dd:ba, it was **mostly** subtext and tension; loaded looks, heavy silences, things not said and pure unadulterated yearning... And it's crazier when you remember that despite the emotional depth, Karen and Frank actually share a few scenes together compared to the other ships. But with those few scenes, they created a very compelling dynamic and forged a bond so layered and deep, so complex and emotionally intense that you forget they haven't really had much time together. We actually get to see their connection build on raw honesty, recognition, respect, darkness, and their willingness to just sacrifice for each other and it's undeniable. And the show runners saw all that and were smart enough to get with the program and recognize it in canon, endgame or not.

Honestly, major props to Jon and Deborah cos not many actors can do so much with only subtext and so little screen time together. With a few scenes and acting restrictions (they couldn't even kiss, their kiss scene was cut), they delivered on "show, don't tell". That's some A+ talent. They really did that. I'm awed.

On when did Frank started falling in love with Karen.

I wonder at point the realisation hit him, when did he finally choose to acknowledge it. Because to be honest I don't even think denial was an option for him, it seemed like the smoothest fall ever, I can't pinpoint when it happend since he goes puppy mode the second he sees her.

I often think of how that troubled him, probably disgusted him as it certainly felt like a betrayal to Maria, as the "human/emotions" part of him, he associated to her and their family, it was reserved to them only and to see him processing that would've been so interesting.

Karen has been a constant in his life for nearly a decade now, regardless of how little they've communicated during that time, his reaction/dedication to her hasn't lessend in the least. It's quite the contrary seeing as he ran to her the second she called.

He tried in his way to extend an olive branch only to be turned down, understandably, but I'd like have an insight of his mindstate/feelings and how they affected him and how he dealt with the loneliness of his choices.

Here for one ship. The greatest slow burn of the mcu.

ok was anyone gonna tell me that after this iconic overdramatic panel:

1. matt realizes he was stupid for causing a GIANT EXPLOSION RIGHT BY HIS HEAD and 2. he TAKES OFF FRANKS SHIRT AND WEARS IT?!?!???

Okay, for the record, I hate love triangles. It's one of my least favourite tropes, but that's obviously where the writers want to take Matt, Frank and Karen so we just have to deal (and inevitable fix the mess with fanfic).

I've seen some posts on here arguing for Karedevil and for Kastle, but I haven't really seen the arguments constructed in terms of what it means narratively for the person Karen doesn't choose, and IMHO that's what the writers of the show should be concentrating on.

If Karen doesn't choose Matt...he'd be fine. Eventually. He'd get over it. He's gotten over losing people before, and he's always bounced back and found someone else. There's been Clair, and Karen, and Elektra and Heather...

The boy gets around. He's charming and handsome and while he's obviously not great boyfriend material in the show, he gets the ladies again and again.

Frank is very, very different. The show has set him up to be a family man without a family. He loves deeply - so deeply that it breaks him - and he's so hesitant about being with someone again that he'd rather live alone and in pain than risk that kind of heartbreak.

But he loves Karen. And she's been set up as his 'After'. The thing that would pull him out of his destructive life as the Punisher, if only he had the courage to accept her and her love.

So what happens to him if Karen chooses Matt? Sure, he's always tried to push her onto Matt, but it's a way to protect himself. To put up a barrier between them. If she actually chose Matt...that would condemn Frank to a life of being nothing more than the Punisher. He will spend the rest of his (inevitably) short life alone and hurt, chewing painkillers in a bunker. And I think that's incredibly sad.

It would probably satisfy the comic fanboys who just want a Punisher that kills and kills and kills...but for the narrative arc of Frank Castle, it would just be so sad.

And such a waste.

a flirty banter between frank and karen must involve being held at gunpoint, being shot at and actually taking a bullet or two so they can laugh about it over coffee.

When I say I want yearning I mean I want Karen and Frank.

I don’t want a mere 200 pages of bickering and now they’re married.

No I want Frank and Karen. I want years of slow burn and pining with no kissing, just hugging and relationship building and bonding and YEARNING

That’s what I mean when I want yearning.

Someone was saying that the whole triangle scene was the writers showing Frank as a third wheel in Karedevil, but I completely disagree. There is a huge difference between that scene and the one in which Karen and Frank are talking:

When Karen and Matt are talking, Frank is the focus and the topic, HE is the elephant in the room.

When Karen and Frank are talking they are the ONLY ones in the room. Matt is...just there. On the side... not even on the same frame. He is the third wheel not Frank.

The two very different framings speak for themselves:

Matt and Karen become more and more out of focus and then you can't even see them. And they don't talk about anything else other than....*cough* frank *cough*

And here Matt is all alone and looking uncomfortable hahaha. Not even on center frame. He is not in their world. Frank is the one that lets him in after excruciating silence and Karen's rejection of the coffee. And only does it to break the tension.

The way Frank sighs and immediately leaves when he hears them mention “the blonde” over the radio SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP we are so back

what i love about kastle is that it’s always frank waking up in a bed like some battle-worn damsel in distress, and honestly? i hope they keep that tradition alive in the punisher special
