Techyminute - James Valles - Developer, Innovator, Life-long Student. Always E

When I introduce myself as a data scientist, I often get questions like “What’s the difference between that and machine learning?” or “Does that mean you work on artificial intelligence?” I’ve responded enough times that my answer easily qualifies for my “rule of three”:

Microsoft wants to teach blind kids to code.

Microsoft Wants To Teach Blind Kids To Code.

I know i will seam like an Ahol  for saying this, but seriously Microsoft, you haven’t found any thing simpler to teach blind kids? or is this just a PR stunt ?

Yes there is a big demand for programmers, but programming is very hard to learn, much much more for blind kids!!! And i am sure blind kids would need much more important life skills than coding.

There might be some good intentions there, but still, i think it’s just a PR stunt!

here’s the announcement on Microsoft blog These days, most kids get their first introduction to coding through simplified tools that let them drag and drop blocks of commands, creating programs that can do things like navigate mazes or speed through space.A team of Microsoft researchers and designers in the company’s Cambridge, UK, lab is taking that concept one step further. The team has created what they are calling a physical programming language. It’s a way for kids to physically create code by connecting pods together to build programs. The system, called Project Torino, is designed to make sure that kids who have visual impairments or other challenges can participate in coding classes along with all their classmates. But Cecily Morrison, one of the researchers working on the project, is hoping the system also will be appealing and useful for all learners, regardless of whether they have visual impairments or other challenges.

Foodborne Chicago finds dodgy restaurants with tweets, and R
If, like me, you've ever had a sandwich from a dubious deli and then been laid up for days afterwards, you know that food poisoning is no trifling matter. In the past, local authorities would only ever learn of such public health issues if they get reported to the authorities by the victim (or the victim's doctor). But that misses the many cases of less serious illnesses that don't involve a doctor or hospital, or illnesses that simply aren't reported to the authorities. Now, the City of Chicago has found a new way of identifying sources of food poisoning: by...

An Animated History of How Tech Became So Male Dominated
Women developed computer science. Why is the industry mostly men?

𝔸𝕣𝕖 ℍ𝕚𝕘𝕙 𝕋𝕖𝕔𝕙 ℕ𝕖𝕣𝕕𝕤 𝔸𝕣𝕖 𝕊𝕖𝕩𝕚𝕤𝕥𝕤 𝕆𝕣 𝕁𝕦𝕤𝕥 𝕊𝕠𝕔𝕚𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝔸𝕨𝕜𝕨𝕒𝕣𝕕?

Since computing began in the 1940s, women have led major developments in programming and software development. In 1984, 37 percent of computer-science majors were women. What happened? The tech industry’s image shifted rapidly in the 1980s and ’90s, and society began to associate programming with men. Today, only one in four computing jobs is held by a woman
