Everything was right, it felt good, but something was still wrong. Even in the heat of the moment, with their bodies intertwined, Caleb could tell something was off.

Once he made sure she was going to be okay, he gently kissed her forehead.

He hated leaving her like this, but he knew that suffocating her wasn’t the answer. Sometimes she just needed to be alone, and as much as it pained him to do so, he knew he had to follow her wishes. It wouldn’t be for long regardless. He gave her arm one last squeeze before leaving her cuddled up in her blanket, surrounded by plushies.

She lay still, her heart still racing even while wrapped in her blanket cocoon. The memories of that night still swirling in her mind. She knew she wasn’t there anymore, she was safe now, but she could still feel his hands on her, manipulating her into the position he wanted.

Then the scene seemed to fade away, replaced instead by the sounds of Caleb humming in the kitchen. The light clang of pots and pans could be heard as he worked his magic. Slowly, she came back to reality, feeling the soft blanket wrapped around her, hearing Caleb’s soft voice in the next room, and smelling the sweet scent of whatever it was he was whipping up in the next room. She was safe.

Caleb couldn’t help but chuckle slightly at the sight of her shuffling out of his room, still cocooned in his blanket. She slowly made her way over to him before wrapping herself around him and curiously peaking at the food he was preparing.

“Hey! There goes my surprise. Wanna taste?”

He offers a bowl of freshly prepared strawberries to her, sprinkled with a tiny amount of sugar.

Five minutes later and they’re sitting together at the table watching cute videos on Caleb’s phone and eating the freshly prepared strawberries pancakes he made, topped with strawberries and whipped cream. She was safe.
