Law and order

What the hell has happened

You all want the same thing

Peace love and harmony.

We just want freedom

To explore our own minds

To walk across the land

We was giving for free.

We stand with hands in the air

Chanting we just want to be heard

While your stood on the line,

Distorted face , a devils eye.

We was placed upon earth

By your mother and mine

I was giving life , by a wife ,

But I did not choose

To be put upon this world

Which is falling apart in front of me.

I did choose to have a mind

Not to be controlled by the side ,

But to many sheep are falling for the governments lie.

Your hitting innocent humans

While you glare with your power

Think your better then any other .

I don’t disrespect you job

But why do you defend the slobs

And not your job

Which is to protect your family and mine.

Not to use the bat

Given you to by the mighty rats

To a innocent man without a hat

We have no weapons , just a voice

We beg you can hear ,

But we know we fall upon deaths ears .

If we was to bring shields , bats and the world

You would be the ones running for the hills.

We out do the majority of you

But we still carry nothing

We don’t throw stones ,

Our hands are clean

We don’t carry a gun

Just a empty thumb.

We can all play games , believe me so,

But you lock the most powerful men in a zoo,

If them wild animals were let out ,

Your power would no longer be felt

As they would out do the devil in you.

We unite as one with out any cause

Millions of us , face off demons

Who won’t let us become one.

We are told violence is wrong

And we agree can’t you see

It’s just me .

I have no riot gear, My skin is my armour ,

A shield is my face , as I have nothing to hide ,

I don’t carry a baton , I carry a lantern ,

To show you the light , in the darkest point of your life.

I bring my energy , you carry a taser

To zap the life

Straight out of me .

We beg you to see

We are peaceful in this sweet lullaby

We only want to be free.

The Train Derailment in Ohio

NO. 1

On February 3rd, dozens of cars belonging to Norfolk Southern train went off track in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling gigantic amounts of toxic chemicals into the soil, water, and air, killing over 3500 fish have died; locals of the town affected are experiencing nausea, headaches, burning eye sensations and more. Residents have also reported that foxes, chickens, cows, and house pets are dying as a result of the toxin chemical release. The chemical released from the crash, vinyl chloride, is extremely toxic and can severely affect an individual’s liver, kidney, lung, nervous system, and blood. It is highly dangerous and can lead to cancer.

NO. 2

The government-controlled burned the hazardous chemicals, since left untouched could cause an even bigger explosion, and residents were asked to leave at first on February 6th. On February 8th, residents were asked to come back, with officials claiming the area was safe to come back to. Except, residents are claiming that this is not only a government and corporation issue but a massive ecological disaster from which we might not return. The derailment has caused massive environmental problems because scientists and scholars fear that the toxin waste will spread throughout the Ohio River, as it is connected to rivers and basins in 14 states, providing drinking water to over 5 million Americans. The smell of chlorine was reportedly lingering in the air days after the controlled burn and when residents were returning. When vinyl chloride burns, it decomposes into hydrogen chloride and phosgene, with the latter highly poisonous, used in WW1 as a choking agent. Hydrogen chloride is irritating and corrosive to any tissue with which it comes to contact. The viral video of a local news reporter quietly talking about the event and being arrested for doing his job has sparked state outrage.

NO. 3

So, how did this happen, and who is responsible? The horrible disaster is nicknamed Chernobyl 2.0 as residents feel fear and anger over Norfolk Southern and the government’s response to the devastation, which they feel is inadequate. Rail workers tried to strike over unsafe conditions but were forced back to work by the government back in 2011. Norfolk Southern announced a $10 billion stock in March last year while cutting their workforce down to the bones rather than investing in better equipment, more workers, and allowing sick days. Stricter environmental laws and regulations should be at the forefront, instead of the allowance of corporate greed, not to mention the blatant disregard for public safety. More attention should be devoted to this topic, not only for public awareness but to shed light on the role big business plays in increasing pollution and environmental degradation.

Homelessness in America

Homelessness in America is rampantly occurring, and we could all blame it on the recent COVID-19 disease, but we could all agree it is because of poverty. In New York City, and other huge cities all over the world, the gap between extreme wealth and extreme poor have always co-existed. Politicians have wholly ignored such issues, in favor of giving attention to other social issues.

Homelessness In America

The recent poll, taken in January 2020, ‘‘New York had an estimated 91,271 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that total, 15,151 were family households, 1,251 were Veterans, 3,072 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 7,515 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2017-2018 school year shows that an estimated 153,209 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 5,939 students were unsheltered, 44,678 were in shelters, 3,157 were in hotels/motels, and 99,435 were doubled up.’’

Homelessness In America

The numbers continue to grow because legislation is slow, and most shelters are up to their capacity. Most people who have little to no income cannot survive only on government benefits and as it limits to nothing, homelessness increases. ‘‘There is a general consensus that, while not necessarily preventing homeless, the generosity and comprehensiveness of welfare systems of welfare systems shape the degree to which households will experience homelessness and housing exclusion, as well as the characteristics of those households (Allen et al, 2002.) The basic pattern, developed by Stephens and Fitzpatrick, (2007), is that the more generous and comprehensive a welfare system, the fewer the number households who experience homelessness will be largely single-person households and will have experienced other forms of exclusions, substance misuse, and various disabilities. On the other hand, more miserly and constrained welfare systems will generate a much higher number of households experiencing homelessness due to poverty, and housing affordability, rather than individual-level disabilities.’’

Homelessness In America

My name is Arielle, I am a social scientist, and I am a New Yorker speaking about homelessness in my state because I feel that, especially now, everyone should speak up and give their voice as a show of solidarity. I will continue to write and post about social issues impacting my community, state, and the world. There are links to help and donate to all these shelters down below.
