Comparing a Pair of Disney Nerds

So I was watching an episode of Star vs the Forces of Evil with my little sister and brother, specifically the episode “Freeze Day” when I saw this:

I personally started laughing at how he’s got this complex plan set up on how to ask Jackie out, and of course this reminded me of another great Disney nerd:

Of course this realization is more than just two nerds with overly complex plans. I noticed a couple of other similarities between Dipper and Marco. Both of them also get in their own way when it comes to dating (Dipper however is the only one who literally gets in his own way though). They have a close friend/sister who tells them to “Just go and talk to her like a normal person” to which they both respond with a STEP NUMBER. Both of them are given the perfect chance to proceed to the next step, and yet pass it up due to being nervous (it’s not the perfect time).

But here’s the part I find most important about this comparison, for both Dipper and Marco it’s an internal realization that causes them to change. For Marco his realization most likely occurs when he’s watching his own past seeing all the days that he was nodding (such as above). At this point, I believe he concludes, as he later puts it himself, “If you have the time, why waste it?” Dipper realizes while talking with Wendy in the hall, that his plan isn’t getting him anywhere, or as Tyrone put it “The only good conversation you had with her was when you didn’t do any of that list stuff.”

The thing I find most important about this change in the two of them, is that it is an internal change. Star didn’t really help Marco come to his conclusion and Mabel didn’t help Dipper realize that his plan wasn’t getting anywhere. Tyrone didn’t even help Dipper with this since Tyrone lead the mutiny against Dipper earlier, BECAUSE of Dipper’s realization. (Though realistically, Dipper turned against them because he abandoned the plan)

Regardless I think the important fact is that at the end of the day, Dipper tears up his list, showing that he’s grown from this experience, and is ready to move on. (I might do more character analysis on Dipper’s romantic pursuits later showing his growth from Double Dipper to Roadside Attraction.) Marco meanwhile finally stands up and says “Hey” to Jackie, which is actually quite the step forward. This is for Marco, the moment when Dipper “Talks to [Wendy] like a normal person”. While it never states that Marco has abandoned his plan, it’s the first step towards it, and hopefully he’ll realize soon that his plan is only getting in his way. So I guess we should raise a glass to these two nerds, who’ve both realized their own mistakes in dating here.

Finally adding more to the sword fighter/running with scissors Marco au that I got going on. With the absolute bombshells of episodes recently, I got plenty to add the this au. *Cracks knuckles* First of all, let's just quickly brush over 'Bounce Lounge' before we get anywhere near the mess of 'All belts are off.' Now we didn't see a lot of canon Marco in the bounce lounge aside from a few brilliant moments here and there, but the whole club atmosphere made me think about SF!Marco's experience with...adult escapades, shall we say? I don't think I was the only one who noticed aged-up!Marco's suave attitude towards Hekapoo, which was a sharp difference to his awkwardness with females in his youth. It makes me think that during his travels Marco became well-versed in trawling the underworld in search of clues about Hekapoo, and thus encountered many informants. Informants who were commonly found in clubs and brothels maybe? It's not to say that Marco especially engaged in many of the illicit activities offered (until later), but he definitely grew comfortable in club scenes and sexual encounters. So instead of Marco dorkily doing some karate moves on the dance floor after prompting by Star, we get all of the bounce crew (and generally the whole club) gazing in amazement at this young teen PROWLING the dance floor. Marco just has an air of sex around him as he slides comfortably about the floor, keeping his body relaxed as he gyrates to the music; every being alike is stunned by his moves (especially Star who still can't wrap her head around this confident and self-assured Marco). Basically the money they earned for the Bounce Lounge was double of that in the show due to people texting friends about the dark-skinned God on the dance floor (every text accompanied by Marco in a tight top and jeans, the cloth sticking to his developing muscles with sweat). And then shit gets real in 'All belts are off.' Marco, the 30-odd dimension-renowned swordsman and general ass kicker, was passed over for some snot-nosed brat who he could break in a second? In this au he's not jealous or confused. He KNOWS Jeremy is basically what keeps the dojo afloat, so he can see the choice from a logical view. Doesn't mean he's not fucking PISSED. Most of the episode is spent with Marco struggling to keep his confidence as he consistently compares himself to what he once was; Jeremy wouldn't have been given a single thought if he still was strong enough. But Marco keeps his cool and trains twice as hard. However when Jeremy basically embarrasses the honour of the dojo in his little show (honestly I would've drop kicked the child away if I was there), Marco politely asks the Dojo Master dude if he would like to see a proper sparring session to see the true potential of the dodo. The man, nearly asleep with boredom at this point, agrees wholeheartedly in hope that things would get interesting. Holy shit they did. Jeremy is completely unaware of Marco's growth in skill (and physique as their loose gear hides Marco's lean muscles) and thus goes into the fight cocky and sure of his win. The crowd never forgot what an absolute hammering the little prat took at the hands of calm and confident Marco. Marco never speaks nor moves in aggression in the fight, unlike Jeremy with his trash talk and dirty tricks. Marco's used to loud mouth street 'villains' from other dimensions trying to pick on him before he became well-known. He's used to keeping a calm head and steady hands as he systematically destroys people's defences. Jeremy doesn't stand a chance. Humiliated, Jeremy challenges Marco to weaponry, thinking that the boy still hadn't touched a weapon (old Marco didn't like the thought of hurting someone that badly). Instead he gets even more soundly defeated, the wooden sword in Marco's hands moving faster than many can see, each strike hitting a deadly point with a soft tap. Needless to say the dojo gets a huge endorsement from the Dojo Master and his company, Jeremy is now terrified of Marco, and most of Exho Creek learns of Marco Diaz, strongest (sword) fighter around, through word of the mouth. Marco feels a little bit better about himself.

Alright, so I had to instantly make a continuation of my mildly angsty sword fighter au post on what would happen to Marco after being reverted back to his young self. First of all, this kid is LITERALLY 30 YEARS OLD MENTALLY!! He remembers every single moment he spent away from earth's dimension, so it's canon that Marco is mentally and probably emotionally a hell of a lot older than all of his current friends. Talking to people just a few years younger than you is hard enough as you both struggle to relate, so imagine the struggle Marco is going to go through as he tries to interact with people who he hazily remembers were his friends. 16 years have passed since he last saw Janna, Jackie and even Star; his relationships with them are going to be vastly different to what they were before. Would Marco even be interested in Jackie anymore after spending 16 years away from her??? He's mentally 30, liking someone that you will be so weird to him, and he's probably long since grown out of his school kid crush. That lack of romantic affection will be jarring to Jackie, as to her she's just started developing a tentative romantic relationship with Marco, whose now just not interested. Furthermorw, this Marco is going to lose his A+ streak at school as he cant even remember covering any of the topics at school. He's going to forget people's birthdays, their interests and even his own old ones. This Marco will be a stranger; a mature and serious kid that lacks any of Marco's old dorky charm as he's long since outgrown his social awkwardness. Don't even get me started on how Star will suffer as she watches her best friend run himself into the ground in order to build himself back up into the amazing sword master and hero he once was. Or the sense of awkwardness between them as Marco forgets simple facts about Star, or gets lost in his head over things that happened while he was away. Star will be constantly worried over whether Marco wants to go back to the other dimensions, back to being impressive and important once more. On the bright side, soon Marco would begin to grow used to his body and train it up to a decent level of strength so he can do all of the amazing stunts he used to do, including wielding the sword he kept from his travels. Cue most of the kids at his school getting ridiculous crushes on Marco with his intense and mature personality, his vast knowledge about cool tricks like Motorbike stunts and crazy sword wielding skills, and his rocking bod. Additionally, think about his amazing friendship with HP, who often pops into his dimension to simply chat, give moral support or help him train. (Maybe even a jealous Star in the background because did no one else pick up that flirtatious tone Marco and HP between one another? Those two have so much history)

I know we're all hella excited over aged up Marco's hot bod in 'Running With Scissors' (I know I was), but honestly when you step back and look at Marco's situation at the end, the episode takes an almost disturbing tone. Don't get me wrong, I'd love some dorky scenes of Marco attempting to get used to his now tiny body, tripping over his feet and whatnot. But I'd also like to see the angsty stuff hashed out on screen. Give me Marco trying to go through some of his sword katas and getting increasingly frustrated as his form slips constantly and his sword wavers because he doesn't have the muscle memory or strength anymore. He used to basically be a sword master, and now he can barely pick a sword up at swing it. Suddenly all the crazy stunts he got used to doing are out of his reach, and the people around him are cobstantly having to stop him from pushing himself too hard, or patching him up after he goes too hard in a fight. If the show does go down this route instead of ignoring it altogether, I wanna see Marco getting angry as he struggles to fight monsters he once would've taken out in a second. His self-esteem takes a MAJOR hit as he realises all the stuff he can't do anymore; he's just some kid with a few mediocre karate skills, he's not a hero anymore. Then we can see Marco training his body to the limit everyday instead of going to a few karate sessions and just getting by. Since he knows what to do to strengthen his body as he went through it before, everyone can see the difference pretty quickly. Just give me a frustrated Marco who's serious about getting stronger and we get to see the results. Even if we don't get this done in the show, it'd make a hella fine AU; tentatively dubbed sword fighter! Marco au?? I'll probably also make an extra post about the mental/emotional repercussions because this episode has given me way too much to talk about in terms of Marco's character development!
