Summary - 20 years since the fall of the brothers and since Diavolo has spoken to Mephistopheles he summons him to the castle for a chat about their friendship, and a surprising event that happened between him and Lucifer
Authors note - I became a little obsessed with this idea and couldnt get it out of my head. I will warn this has mentions of grooming (look at OG post to fully understand)
Im aware this isnt the canon order of events and Mephistopheles is slightly OOC (for a reason trust everything i do is for a reason) but hush its a fic let me have my whimsy. I also enjoy how things sometimes have names/dialogue different colors on here sometimes so thats why theyre different colors :3
Might turn this to a full fledged fic (here and Ao3) if it gets enough traction

Everything was as it was. Thats what Mephistopheles thought when that angel came into the picture. "Nothing will change between us, I promise" What a lie. Diavolo never lied to Mephistopheles until that dreaded day that good for nothing angel fell. Mephistopheles was always taught from the moment he was born that he was ment to be Diavolos playmate, his best friend. Diavolo was supposed to be his entire reason for exsisting. This wasnt fair. None of this was fair on Mephistopheles. Hes supposed to be the one always on Diavolos side, not that sorry excuse for a right hand.
Mephistopheles was pacing back and forth in his study trying to figure out how to respond to Diavolo.
Diavolo - Hey Mephis, i apologize for not speaking for so long. Come to the castle at your earliest convenience. Please my friend we need to talk.
Diavolo hasnt spoken to him properly in 20 years why now is that changing. Is Lucifer finally leaving? Is he finally giving his place back by his side? Even though he had work to do he decided to take a break to head to Diavolos castle. His mind was racing with whatever Diavolo could want from him to summon him so suddenly. Especially after not speaking to him after 20 years.
Mephistopheles - Im on my way, I shall see you in a moment.
~
Mephistopheles knocked on the castles doors. He was hoping that maybe Diavolo would answer the door but alas Barbatos was always going to be the one to greet him. "Hello Mephistopheles, Diavolo is in his study. Would you like me to lead you there?" Barbatos bowed his head allowing the Duke to walk inside. "No need Barbatos, I remember where it is. Thank you." Mephistopheles returned the head bow, while unnecessary, Barbatos did help raise him and Diavolo. He made his way to Diavolos study that he remembered very vividly. The desk that Diavolo would always sit at whenever he walked through the door. The fire that Diavolo would put on in the winter months with his magic. The couch they would eventually sit on sharing a bottle of demonus laughing and eventually start play fighting. Those were the beautiful days that Mephistopheles remembered so fondly. The days when Diavolo didnt replace him with an angel. The days where Diavolo actually cared about him.
He knocked on the door to Diavolos office to hear a voice that he missed dearly. "Come in." Without second thought Mephistopheles opened the door and was greated by Diavolos familiar smile, and Lucifer sitting on Diavolos desk infront of the crowed prince. "Mephistopheles! Im glad your here. Luci we can continue this conversation later tonight is that alright with you? I wish to speak with Mephistopheles alone." Diavolo got up and placed a hand on Lucifers thigh. "Of course my lord. I shall see you tonight." Lucifer got down from the desk and started to leave the room. "Mephistopheles." He bowed his head some and left the room shutting the door behind him.
"Its good to see you Mephis. I've really missed you." Diavolo walked over to give his old friend a hug but Mephistopheles crossed his arms and was obviously upset. "This is how you greet me after not speaking to me for twenty years?" the duke tried to have a playful tone to his voice but he couldnt hide his obvious pain that snuck out every now and then. How could he not be upset, the man he cared about replaced him with an angel that could ruin his reputation and may not even care about the prince the way that he did. "I understand that you are upset... Rightfully so, but please understand my friend. My father fell asleep right after the brothers fell leaving me with no guidance, I was so stressed that i accidentally cut you out of my life. I deeply apologize." Diavolo put his hand out signalling him to sit down so they could have a proper chat.
Mephistopheles took this moment to take a good look at Diavolo. His hair was as it always was but something different about the way he looked at him. Those golden eyes had something hiding in them and on devils name was Mephistopheles going to figure it out. Mephistopheles sat down on the couch in his usual spot. The strange thing was that it felt the same from the last time that he sat there. "Does Lucifer not sit here?" Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo who sat down next to him on his right. "No the chair next to mine at my desk is where he sits, when we relax we're typically at the chess table or in my bedroom. Now the reason why i asked you to be here." Mephistopheles held Diavolos hand, when he looked down he noticed something strange. On his ring finger was a silver ring with vine engravings and blue sapphires. Mephistopheles was surprised, Diavolo never wore silver, he always wore gold. Come to think of it Lucifer had a gold ring on the same finger.
"Diavolo why are yoy wearing a ring?" Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo who smiled gently. "Thats one of the reasons why i wanted to speak to you. Not the main reason though but I wanted you to be the first to know. Lucifer and I are together, he allowed me to tell you after a few years of convincing though." Diavolo chuckled with the same smile. "Im sorry... A few years? When did you two get together." Mephistopheles felt his heart drop. He was dating Lucifer, sure it was fine but Lucifer? The man that caused a war, the man that had him replaced. Diavolo thought for a moment and had a guilty look on his face. "Ok dont be mad, three years after he fell" Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo shocked. Diavolo wasnt looking at him instead his golden eyes focusd on the ring on his finger smiling. "Now the reason-" Mephistopheles stood up and looked spoke without speaking. "You would date a rust blood but wouldnt even bother calling me back?!" Diavolo stood up also and put his hands on Mephistopheles shoulders. "Thats... Why i asked you to come... We need to talk about our relationship" Mephistopheles backed away. "Whats there to talk about... You abandoned me for-" Diavolo raised his voice. "Call him anything other than his name and you can forget about having this conversation!"
Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo who wasnt happy in the slightest. "He has a name and you will refer to him as such." Mephistopheles looked down and sighed. He knew Lucifers name, but he couldnt bring himself to say it, his anger couldnt bring himself to say the name of the man that cuased his replacement, that caused Diavolo to stop caring about him. "Fine... You abandoned me for Lucifer. What more is there to say?" Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo and saw that he looked hurt. It had been years since he had seen Diavolo give that same look to him specifically. "You think i abandoned you? Yes i ghosted you but I didnt abandon you Mephis, I'm sorry you feel like I did but that was never my intention." Diavolo steped back towards his friend to fully talk to him. "Let me explain please, then i will allow you to speak your mind." Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo, the look in his eyes were a mix of guilt and pitty. "Alright fine explain."
"I was speaking to Luci the other day about how i missed you and ive come to realize something with his help. Our relationship isn't healthy for either of us. You were conditioned to satisfy my every whim, you were also conditioned to be forced to not only respect me but to be put on this pedistal that I am above not only your wellbeing but also everything." Mephistopheles looked at Diavolo. He wasnt conditioned to feel this way, he felt this way on his own, sure his father Astaroth reminded him to make sure he didnt say no to Diavolo but he never said no to the King so he thought it was just normal. "Diavolo I dont know what you're talking about, I was not conditioned to do anything of the sorts my feelings for you are my own." Mephistopheles heard Diavolos sigh and started to get frustrated. "I loved you! I love you Diavolo. And you replace me with someone who barley knew you when you two met? What about me?! I spent every day with you. I spent every hour by your side, i worship the ground you stand on. I dont understand what Lucifer has that i dont!"
Diavolo grabbed Mephistopheles arms and pulled him close to him, Mephistopheles felt the warmth that radiated from his body, the warmth that Mephistopheles has missed over these 20 years. "Listen to yourself! Listen to what you are saying! I dont want that! I love you yes but thats not the love either of us want or need! I needed a friend i have people who already listen to my every whim. Which is why i was so drawn to Lucifer when we first met, he was hesitant about my idea and told me, Lucifer not only treats me like a person, he sees me as a person not just the prince of devildom. You need to understand that." Mephistopheles thought about what he said. He thought long and hard, finally letting his words sink in. He looked up at Diavolo who smiled gently seeing that he finally understood what he was saying. "I thought I was doing well... I just wanted to hear your praise and hear you say that you cared about me" Mephistopheles put his head on Diavolos shoulder. "Its alright my friend. You know now, im sorry for only realizing now before it became to much. Consider this our fresh start we can start over from here and go forward" Diavolo hugged Mephistopheles who hugged back and they stayed like that for a while.
It would take a while for Mephistopheles to stop trying to be so close to Diavolo but as long as Diavolo stays paicent with him, hes sure he would be able to. Maybe be could move on and find someone on his own terms instead of having Diavolo tell him to date. Maybe one day.

(Takes place after Lore VII. Major characters: Raphael, Luke, and Solomon. ~1500 words)
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Caked earth crumbled beneath the feet of the three travelers, the soft cracking and crunching filling the silence of the dead air. Solomon put a hand above his eyes to shield them from the light as he gazed out to the horizon. There wasn't much to see. For miles across rolling hills, the earth was dried to a pale beige, covered in cracks and fissures. Heaps of ash and blackened stumps were all that remained of the tranquil forests, and the robin blue sky was now tinted a harsh, ominous yellow. "I hope Michael and Simeon are okay..." Luke uttered. The young child was clearly unsettled, his eyes seeming glued open wide. It was no doubt uncomfortable for the angel to see what had become of the Celestial Realm. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea to bring a child along, but Luke was the only one with a powerful enough protective blessing to shield Solomon and Raphael from the blinding, burning light. The adult angel glanced back at Luke for a second, his dark blue eyes settling on the troubled boy. However, he didn't say anything. And he never slowed his pace. Raphael was silent, and facing forward again before long. "I'm sure they're fine." Solomon offered with a smile. "The Coalition has grown quite powerful. I'm sure they're being taken care of well." "But half the Coalition is demons." Luke pointed out, squirming and shuddering a bit at the thought. "I imagine Lucifer isn't letting them get too out of hand." Raphael stated, glancing back slightly without turning his head. Luke begrudgingly accepted this, and the three continued their trek. While the rest of the Equinox Coalition was making their plans in the Human World, Solomon, Luke and Raphael were on a mission in the Celestial Realm. Their goal? To find the Ring of Light. "According to my research, the Ring of Light might be worth a try." Solomon had said in a meeting with the other Coalition leaders. "Or, it would be." He frowned. "Unfortunately, as many of you know," the sorcerer glanced to Lucifer, "the Ring of Light was lost in the Great Celestial War." "Actually, it wasn't." Michael stepped forth from the corner of the bunker, the flame of his wings illuminating the roundtable as he grew closer. Most of the members instinctively flinched back as he did so, a fact that Michael elected not to comment on. "What do you mean, it wasn't?" Solomon asked. "Oh, right." Simeon spoke with a smile. "Michael, you have the Ring of Light, don't you?" "I do." Michael nodded as he took a step back. "Unfortunately, I left it in the Celestial Realm when I moved to the Human World for the war. It should be in my quarters in the Celestial Palace." The room's skeptical hope dissipated as Michael spoke, and each member looked to one another. A long moment of silence fell over the room. "Just how destroyed is the Celestial Realm, exactly?" Lucifer spoke up, looking at Michael. "If it's anything comparable to the Devildom, it probably isn't worth it." Satan remarked with a sigh. Lucifer shot Satan a harsh look, seeming to lean ever so slightly in towards Lord Diavolo. Lord Diavolo, like Michael, had distanced himself from the table, and he had spent most of the meeting in silent yet clearly visible discomfort from his worsening power-sickness. If Solomon's theory that the magic-neutralizing and magic-managing powers of the Ring of Light could treat power-sickness, Diavolo needed it, and quick. "Simeon..." Michael started. "Yes?" Simeon spoke, a nervous frown present on his scarred face as he turned to face Michael. "How is Luke doing?" A sigh of relief echoed through the room. "Michael, is this really the time to be asking about that?" Simeon asked, earning a subtle nod of agreement from Lucifer. "Last I checked, Luke was nearly untouched by the effects of the light." Michael pointed out. Simeon frowned deeply, his charred wings beginning to lift. "If you think I'll be alright with you sending Luke back up there alone, you are very mistaken." "No, no, let him continue." Raphael spoke, exchanging a glance with Michael. "The reason Luke was able to survive relatively unscathed was because of his nearly unprecedented protective abilities. This protection can be shared with others through blessings." Michael explained. "So, if Luke can shield others from the effects of the light using his blessing, we can potentially send a small team up to the Celestial Realm to procure the ring." Tension seemed to ease from the room as the members looked amongst each other. One question was clearly in everyone's minds: who would this team be? "We should likely keep the team as small as possible, to avoid putting too much strain on Luke." Simeon spoke, earning several nods of agreement. "I believe it goes without saying that Solomon would go, as it was his idea." Michael said. "In that case, at least one high-ranking angel should accompany him, as it is the Celestial Realm. Simeon and I need to stay here to manage and protect the Coalition, so Raphael, would you?" The gray-haired angel nodded. "Of course." And that was how the three ended up on a long journey through the Celestial Realm. Unfortunately, locating the Celestial Palace was proving difficult. The strong light created a sort of white fog that made it extremely difficult to see. With how barren their surroundings were, Luke was beginning to question whether the Celestial Palace was even still standing. Though, of course, he didn't dare say it out loud. Solomon put his hand up as a visor once more and peered into the distance. Finally, he saw the silhouette of a building. It wasn't the Celestial Palace; it wasn't tall enough, and it wasn't in the shape of the palace's spires. But it was something. It could serve as a useful landmark. "There's a building up ahead." Solomon informed the others. "Let's pick up the pace." Raphael responded, much to the short-legged Luke's chagrin. The group covered the ground rather quickly, and found themselves on the cobbled path of a small town. The buildings seemed, surprisingly, in good condition, albeit neglected. Any buildings made of wood had burned away with little trace, leaving only the fire-resistant buildings standing in opposition to the unforgiving realm. "Oh, I think I know where we are." Raphael spoke. "If we go north of here, we should be at the Celestial Palace within twenty minutes." A sigh of relief came in response. "You sound tired, Luke. Do you need me to carry you the rest of the way?" Solomon asked with a teasing smile. "Wha- no I don't! I'll be fine." "Alright," Solomon said skeptically. The light mood was quickly shattered by the sound of shifting rubble. Luke jumped back, and the two adults quickly turned their gaze to their left in the direction of the sound. "What was that?!" Luke asked. Solomon and Raphael looked to each other, nodded, and approached the sound. Solomon was the first to see. A stone roof lay across the ground, split off into pieces. It must have fallen after the wooden walls holding it up burned down. Under a rather large piece, an angel was pinned down. They were stuck from their waist down, laid across another piece of roof. They looked... barely alive. Their feathers had been scorched until only the bare skin of their wings remained, and their body was covered in burns. Whether the burns were from the oppressive heat alone or whatever fire burned the house down was uncertain. But, miraculously, they were breathing. They were breathing. Solomon could see their chest rising and falling. "They're alive!" Solomon exclaimed, voice full of wonder and surprise as he reached and pulled them out from under the rubble. He frowned deeply as the sound of ripping skin filled the air, and a muffled moan rung out. Solomon's eyes widened and he offered a weak, "sorry." As Solomon had dragged the angel out, this brought the body into the view of Luke, who was approaching after Solomon's exclamation. The boy gasped in horror as he laid his eyes on them. "Are they going to be okay?!" He demanded. They weren't. Solomon could tell when he brought the angel down and got a good look at their face. The flesh across the entire face seemed melted. Not just burnt; melted. It was nearly impossible to make out any features. Not because they didn't exist anymore, like with Michael, but because they were so swollen and distorted and fused together. This angel must have been trapped there, forced to stare up at the sun, for who knows how long. And considering they weren't able to escape to the Human World, they were likely a low-ranking angel. The low-ranking angels got it the worst. Raphael walked towards the body and knelt down. Without a word, he held onto their hand. Given how burnt it was, Solomon half expected the skin to slough off, but it didn't. There was hardly time to. Within an instant, the entire body was turned to a bright white silhouette, then vanished. Only ash was left in its place. Luke gasped. "Raphael, why did you do that?!" He screamed. Raphael still said nothing, only standing back up with a solemn look on his face. "RAPHAEL!" Luke yelled. Raphael still didn't acknowledge Luke, only turning to Solomon to say "let's keep goi-" "NO, Raphael! What did you do?! How could you just... WHY?! You just murd-" "Quiet!" Raphael snarled, face twisting into a vicious grimace as he clenched his shaking fists at his sides. Luke's eyes widened as he stumbled back. Raphael took a deep breath and once again told Solomon, "Let's keep going." The rest of the expedition was dead silent.

MICHAEL
-----------------------------
Solomon: [Michael?]
Solomon: [Michael?]
Solomon: [Michael?]
Solomon: [Michael?]
------------------------------
It had been one hundred and eight days exactly since Solomon had sent his first mildly-panicked message to Michael. Exactly one hundred and eight days that Michael had ignored him. No, not ignored him. The messages didn’t show up as “read” like they had with Raphael. It had been at least one hundred and eight days of Michael not checking his messages.
No one else was responding to messages anymore, either. Solomon had tried reaching out to Simeon and Raphael again, only to be met with silence. He’d tried contacting Asmodeus, who he’d been sure would have called him immediately to explain everything, eager to talk to him again... only to be met with silence. Day in and day out, Solomon had been surrounded with silence.
Today was no exception. Once again, Solomon got no response.
Solomon sat at his desk, his drooping, tired head held up only by the hand obscuring half his face.
What is going on?
The words rattled in his head like an obsessive chant, holding him together just as much as they were destroying him. It was all he could think about anymore. It was shattering his brain and holding it together with weak glue.
It had started out with the power of the realms. Solomon had detected major disturbances in the power balance, disturbances that continued to fluctuate over the days. One day, it was the Devildom being more powerful than the Celestial Realm and throwing off the balance; the next day, it would be the Celestial Realm. At that point, Solomon had been worried, but not concerned.
He got concerned when the power jumped a tenfold. Then twenty-fold. Soon, thirty-fold. Before long, Solomon had to ask whether it was possible for either realm to sustain these power levels safely, even if they were in balance with each other.
The answer was no.
Every bit of research Solomon had done pointed to the obvious. The power levels he observed were not safe nor sustainable. Either his power estimates were innacurate- and his magical intuition had never been wrong in his two-thousand-year life- or something was very, very wrong.
Books littered the floor, pages dog-eared and spines cracked from books held open by the floor. Papers were strewn everywhere, a vast sea of white and aged beige leaving hardly a crack of wooden tile left. Sections of floor that were exposed bore large footprints, worn into the wood by countless hours of pacing.
None of it had gotten him anywhere. Well, nowhere useful. All of it gave him more and more reason to be concerned.
The sorcerer dug his nails into his face.
What now?
Crash.
The sound of shattering glass rang through the air.
Solomon froze up, considering the possibilities. Was it an aggressor? Was it some angel or demon, finally ready to give answers? Or some human looter taking advantage of the chaos?
It wasn’t long before a familiar voice rang through the hall.
“Solomon!” It was Thirteen. And she sounded none too happy.
Despite her angry tone, the sorcerer breathed a sigh of relief. If Thirteen was here for another game on his soul, perhaps he could get some sense of normalcy, even for a second. Maybe seeing Thirteen’s indignant pout of defeat could cheer him up, even just slightly.
“I’m in here.” He called out, standing up from his desk, pushing out his chair and turning to face the door.
Fast, light footsteps pattered down the hall, followed by the whoosh of sliding paper.
“Wha- AAAH!”
Thunk.
The reaper was sprawled out on her stomach on the floor, having slid on Solomon’s carpet of research papers. The wind was knocked out of her for a moment before she vigorously pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, and then to her feet.
“Hey!” She yelled, lunging herself forward a few steps in his direction. “What was that about?! Setting traps is my-” She paused, her green, lizardlike eyes widening as her head tilted slightly to the side. “You don’t look so good.”
She wasn’t wrong. The sorcerer’s eyes were sunken and weary, drooping into dark circles from countless sleepless nights. He’d lost weight- he’d forgotten to eat a fair few times while studying. The absolute mess that was his workspace certainly didn’t help.
“I guess not.” Solomon said with a frown, stepping away from his desk.
“Uh, anyway...” Thirteen said with an awkward blink, before her tone hardened once more. “I came here to ask you what the hell is going on.”
“If this is about what I think it’s about, I wish I knew.” The sorcerer said soberly, casting his eyes across the books and papers scattered around the room.
“All my candles are burning super fast now.” Thirteen said. “It’s insane. Usually they burn at a steady pace, but now I have candles that were nearly full the other day rapidly burning below halfway! The death rates have been ridiculous! Do you understand how hard it is to be a reaper, even when conditions are normal? Trying to keep up with all of this is so aggravating! What’s going on?! Is this some prank?!”
For a moment, Solomon just looked at her with wide eyes. Then, with a soft sigh, he lowered his head into his hand. The only thing the wise sorcerer could utter was, “Fuck.”
“What the hell kind of answer is that?! Tell me what’s going on, now!” Thirteen stepped toward him.
Solomon shook his head grimly, taking a step back and looking back up at Thirteen. “Something is seriously wrong with the power balance between the realms, and both the Celestial Realm and the Devildom appear to be launching attacks on the Human World.” He explained.
“Okay, the attacks explain the deaths. But what about the candles burning so weirdly? Usually, I’d know far in advance if something like this was going to happen!”
“Magic is woven so deeply into the three realms that any disruption of it can prove dangerous. With the magic of two of the three realms severely skewed, it’s likely they’re suffering immense consequences. With how high the Celestial Realm and the Devildom’s power are right now, I’m surprised either realm is even habitable; no being should be able to withstand that much power asides from God and the Demon King themselves. This power boost only started a few months ago and very likely wasn’t meant to happen, so it has severely interrupted the lifespans of angels and demons alike.”
Thirteen’s eyes widened.
“Now that I think about it, it was getting quite cold in my cave. I couldn’t help but feel something was off” She frowned. “I guess my cave was somewhat sheltered, and I hadn’t left it at all the past few months until I teleported to the human world to come get you.”
“I have to say, I’m flattered you came to me first.” Solomon said with a smile that immediately earned him a nasty glare from Thirteen.
“It’s not like that!” She protested. She took a deep breath and composed herself, “It’s just… you’re the most powerful sorcerer around, right? I figured that if this wasn’t just some prank by you to make my job harder, then you’d at the very least be knowledgeable enough to help.”
“Unfortunately, you may be disappointed.” Solomon replied with a bitter smile. “I’ve been researching this every since the first signs, and I haven’t made much progress. Everything I’ve read points to bad signs, and it doesn’t help that I can’t get any information out of anyone.”
Thirteen scoffed. “Well, you’d better find something soon, sorcerer.”
“Say, Thirteen...” Solomon cracked a smile. “How would you like to work together on this?”
Thirteen’s eyes widened, and for a long moment, she was silent. Eventually, she let out a soft sigh and stepped toward him.
“Fine.”
