Shirley Chisholm: 1st Black Woman elected to Congress. She served from 1968-1982. She opposed the draft in Vietnam and championed women, children, and the poor. In 1971, she was instrumental in passing the Comprehensive Child Development Bill which was to provide a national daycare system designed to allow parents of young children to work. The bill was vetoed by President Nixon on the grounds that it âwould undermine the family.â
