I’m confused… who’s Rem?
Rewatching Re:Zero again, for various reasons, and I really want to take a closer look at it because it's been stuck in my head for such a long time. (It's actually the first scene I ever watched!)
Going back to the Rem Infodump, well- this is part of the reason I think Rem's definitely not stopping her character development. From the beginning, we get the message from this story that self sacrifice without any reward is not something someone should be satisfied with.
And this is extremely interesting because of what we learn later on- that despite all the physical pain, Ram was relieved that her horn broke. She didn't regret it, and only Rem was hurt by it emotionally.
I wonder if she ever properly talked to Rem about it? I wonder if she knew how to do that. I wonder if Rem ever knew how it felt to hold the pressure the clan was putting on her sister...
Ram's only guilt here comes from how it hurt Rem.
And then Ram asks Subaru who he'd prefer to be friends with, and I realized something pretty interesting.
These describe each of the twins, but they also describe Subaru himself. Both, together. Those two things add up to a large part of his internal conflict, and are made difficult by the fact that they contrast each other so much.
Because Subaru cannot just save everyone easily, because he's just a normal kid who was thrown into situations far beyond his abilities, he has to learn to love himself while dealing with both of these issues simultaneously. Letting go of one of these flaws (as he sees it) means completely and shamelessly embracing the other. If he refuses help, the only way he can be strong is to sacrifice himself. If he prioritizes himself, then he'll only ever be able to take from those he cares about.
I love how the story doesn't give him the option to become stronger, either. Like- he has Guiltywhip, he has Beatrice, he has Witch Authorities, but he's not the Isekai Protagonist he'd hoped he could be. He can't be Reinhardt (though... I don't know if he would want to be. That comes with its own rabbit hole, doesn't it?).
Rem and Ram each are like two mirrors of different parts of him, and they each have dynamics with each other that play on these connections.
Rem and Ram each embody different parts of the message of Re:Zero and I think that is so cool. All of them do, but the way this is presented just. I love it.
I don't mean to always talk about Subaru, I swear... I'm just in love with his character... Subaru's got such good dynamics with the whole cast,,,
I wish this conversation was in the final timeline, or that Subaru recreated it somehow... got the message across... man

also can we talk about how there's little trinkets and items that represent the main cast's personalities? Like, the spoon and the quill represent Rem and Ram in this story, the flower pin that Emilia gets from the little girl is like... the proof of her kindness, and the 10 yen coin represents subaru's brand of kindness- from the very beginning of the story. as well as the key from the elior forest being another one of emilia's, which has a similar diamond shaped gem to the quill and spoon. The only one of the main cast I can't pin down is beatrice... her book? her crown? I'm not sure. I hope we see Subaru's Beatrice diary in the next season!!

Re:Zero AU TOG
Dunno if anyone’s thought of this yet, but imagine Re:Zero with Bam or Yihwa as Emilia and Wangnan as Subaru. Rachel could be Roswaal with Arlene taking Echidna’s place.
I have never watched Re:Zero (everything I know is internet osmosis) but it sounds cool.

There is a version of Emilia/Subaru that makes me go absolutely feral but i'm not sure re:zero will go that way so I decided to write it out just to get it out of my system (and than accept what I'm given by a really excellent story that is just doing something different than what I want)
So in that version of events Emilia=Satella. I heard through fandom osmosis that there are two different entities in Satella (Envy and Satella). Emilia is Satella.
Second: the first time loop we see isn't Subarus first timeloop (I think that is canon because a) we never see Subaru arrive in Lugunica b) his relationship/contract with Satella is already in place) -> that can have two different reasons: a) Subaru is a reincarnation of someone Satella knew or he forgot a bunch of stuff including Satella. My feral HC combines these two
So what if a version of Subaru met Satella 400 years ago (maybe the guy who was summoned 400 years ago and brought a bunch of Japanese culture to Lugunica) but he was kind of fucked up/a bit of a fuckboy as was Satella who was at that point just completely disillusioned by the world and what if they kind of found love in each other but we're to far gone to actually make each other happy/be good for each other (or maybe just Satella was this way) and so they decided to start again both as a version who can become good. Satella sealed herself. The good part of her became Emilia and the "bad" part remained to protect Subaru. and Subaru reverted maybe to his self in the beginning of the summonings (or became reincarnated as well) and so they started again. Because Satella cannot die there's still a version out there who desperately loves Subaru and she saves him. She is the part of Emilia that Emilia has sealed because she cannot believe that she can be good if she is Satella at the same time (And Emilia was born to be happy) both Subaru and Emilia forgot her. And now Subaru hates Satella. He fears her. All that love and nowhere to go. She comes across as a crazy stalker. At the end of re:zero Emilia and Satella become one (that is how Satella is defeated) and they become able to die as well as Subaru becoming mortal as well and it's revealed that Subaru wasn't alone in remembering. There was someone else as well who remembered and struggled and tried to do better.
AND all the what ifs are canon because they are things Subaru choses at one point or the other and than Satella reverts everything back to zero because Subaru failed to become happy and good
I am absolutely obsessed with witch cult victim theory. I also think it would make a lot of sense to the cast, especially if it was combined with the theory that Subaru got his name and memories eaten.
Although this is more just what I think would make sense with what the rest of the cast knows about Subaru. Not nessasrally what they might actually think about him. Although I'll also consider that.
He would undergo the typical witch cult victim theory shenanigans (torture) while in the witch cults custody, which I think could include having his name eaten. He may have also had some of his memories eaten as part of this, but I prefer to think he lost them due to insanity. Although I don't actually think he really "lost" his memories in this hypothetical situation. I think it would make more sense that they were just...jumbled up in a way. He may remember things like his relationships with the people he cared about, what these people were like, certain aspects of how the world works, some things about his hometown, and the sorts, but none of it really makes sense anymore. He knows he cared about Emilia, but he can't remember her name. He knows he was her knight, but he's not quite sure what a knight actually is anymore. Or how one is supposed to act. Written words don't make any sense. Details about his homeland that may have seemed a bit strange or unique to the average person get twisted and blown out of proportion to become fantastical.
So basically, I think it would make sense if he was from some village that got destroyed by the witch cult (like what happened with Rem and Rams village). This village may have been pretty isolated, with very little or almost no contact with the rest of the world. This might explain why no one has ever heard about anything he mentions as being "from his hometown."
I do also think some characters probably think they knew Subaru before, but then his name got eaten. So It could be that he fled when his village was destroyed, somehow got involved in the royal selection (probably by becoming Emilia's knight), and then got kidnapped by the witch cult as he was hunting them down for revenge. Or, he may have left his hometown for any other reason, became Emilia's knight, and then went back to visit his village and was there when it got attacked. Either way, he ends up being kidnapped by the cult.
Anyways, like I've said, I don't think anyone in Re: Zero would have it that thought out, to the point where they've basically just written an angsty fan fiction in their head about Subaru’s hypothetical Tragic Past. This is just what I think would make the most sense considering what they know about him.
I also like the idea that the witch cult probably put him under some sort of taboo so he's not able to tell anyone about any of this.
What are your favorite plausible in-universe theories that the characters have to explain Subaru’s many eccentricities? I’ll go first:
Subaru was a soldier of some sort who served Lady Emilia as one of her only subjects, but after an encounter with the White Whale he lost his Name and thus nobody remembers anything about him beyond the day he saved Emilia from an assassin. The Whale also stole almost all of his memories, which is why he’s illiterate and also lacks common sense most of the time.
