The Duties of a Magical Girl

A few people have asked me what I would consider to be valid work for a magical girl. In a similar vein, I’ve seen a lot of folks here struggle with the idea of ‘concepts’ and feeling that they need to conform to a preconceived notion of what magical heroes do.

This post has been a long time coming but I think I’m finally feeling confident about what I want to convey here. If you’ve been waiting on this, thank you so much for your patience and I hope it helps you in your journey!

While tasks like tracking down Labyrinths and vanquishing evil entities seem to be almost standard for many magical girls, these by no means define what it means to be a magical hero. I would also go so far as to say that you do not need to transform, whether that would be physically or astrally, to be a magical girl.

Our jobs boil down to a simple idea: to make the world a better place. How we then decide to go about that is what ultimately makes our individual approaches and practices unique.

While a statement like ‘making the world a better place’ can seem grandiose and unachievable, we can decide to start smaller or on a more personal level. Realistically, it may be more feasible and responsible to approach your work in a way that makes the world better for you, your friends and family, or your communities.

We do not all need to tackle big, existential problems through our magical duties—especially if you’re just starting out on your journey. Focus on making the world happier, more welcoming, and more habitable for you. This may take the form of self-care, confidence boosting, or glamours through the use of magia. You can also do this through volunteer work, community building, and mutual aid; I often find that helping others helps me with my complicated feelings of confidence and self-worth.

This is not to say that the astral battles and the like aren’t worthwhile, but they should be done with the goal of making our world and communities better—however you envision that to be.

If you’re new to visualization and astral projection, are having some difficulties with it, or even if you’re a veteran looking for resources, I highly recommend The Mentalist's Handbook: An Explorer's Guide to Astral, Spirit, and Psychic Worlds by Clint Marsh with illustrations by Jeff Hoke.

It was one of the first occult texts I picked up that I found refreshingly succinct and accessible. One of my biggest pet peeves is when occult authors describe tools or techniques but fail to explain the mechanics or don’t even attempt to offer any insight; Marsh not only details an approachable practice regimen but Hoke’s illustrations offer a bit of whimsy and inspiration for your own visualizations. Not to mention, the publication itself is just beautifully printed! Of course it is also available online in many formats but I definitely do not regret having a copy in my personal library!

how do you astral project? Do you have a spell for that?

you can use subliminals or spells if you want, but it's not needed at all ! i havent actually ap'd yet , but i've done a ton a research and asked other magical heroes that have ! ( tip - if you're a beginner magi trying to fight your first witch , PLEASE bring another , more experienced magi just in case ! never fight your first witch alone , wait until you get the hang of everything ! )

find a comfortable , quiet spot to lay down and relax . you can ap any time during the day , but in ny opinion , it's easier to attempt in the morning so you don't fall asleep . when you wake , stay very still . VERY STILL . don't even move your TOE .

your body will eventually start tingling uncomfortably . ( this is where i usually mess up , i cant handle the sensation ,,, ) at this point , move your body upwards ( without actually moving your body ) . just imagine it very strongly .

eventually , you should be able to pull your being up and out of your body ! personally , i recommend just getting used to the experience first , the first time you AP you shouldn't stray far from your body . stay in the room you're ap'ing in , and look at something you don't really pay attention to in your room . maybe a specific crayon or something ! note things about it ( ex , the paper is peeling off, the color is dandelion yellow , ect ) then return to your body. then , go and check the object and see if your descriptions were right ! the next time you AP , you can go to a different room ( one that your body isn't in ) and do the same thing with an object there ! and eventually , you can travel to different places you havent been before, then go to those places awake and see if they're the same ! that's how you know if it works

to return to your body , there are multiple ways . you can either go towards your body and pull yourself into it , make yourself aware of your body ( ex , thinking of it , trying to move your real limbs instead of your astral ones ) . some people , if they have an objective going into the astral , just automatically return to their bodies after completing their task . but if all of these fail, don't worry! your body will pull you back once it wakes up .

my concept is puella magi madoka magica, but that might change as i am very new to this community.

i have been practicing chaos magick on and off for a few years now, and while i am not new to the concept of pop culture magick / pop culture paganism, i am new to the practice of it. same thing w/ astral projection as well. im also a shifter ! i knew about and was a shifter back in 2020, but forgot about shifting until recently, where i got back into it.

im the host of a did system, am nonhuman (mentally, will identify as physically once i make my contract), queer, trans (genderqueer + ftm), and am physically and mentally disabled.

my main / biggest kin is grey wolf (though i do have others), and this aspect of who i am impacts me greatly. tldr; beware of wolf posting

i worship both "traditional" gods and pce/d's. i currently worship Loki, Gaia / Mother Earth, Dionysus (causally, dont work w/ Him at all atm), Madokami / Ultimate Madoka, Homucifer / Devil Homura, and may start worshipping Ho-Oh (pokemon) and Hekate as well.

Greetings!! Here is a vague looking into my backstory and past life I have pieced together through recovered memories!! I will go more in depth in future posts—

Long ago secrets of the night were stored away into an orb in which we call “myria”. Myria resided In the earths core In order to keep these secrets hidden. What no one realized at the time was that Myria thrived on the very energy of the Earth’s heart, its strength magnified by the heat of its underground prison. As time passed, the power of Myria grew beyond the limits of its containment, eventually forcing it to break free. In an act of self-preservation, Myria took on a new form—a shell, shaped like a human, yet far from mortal. This new being was not a person but a phantom, a dark force carrying with it both the secrets of Myria and its immense, otherworldly power. This Dark Phantom is no other than Mae Valerius!

They ruled a small land in which was called “Myrida”! A dark shadow was cast upon the land and they were cut off from other kingdoms in order to prevent warfare. The people of Myrida lived isolated from other realms, their land cut off to avoid conflict, though life itself remained peaceful. But over time, resentment began to grow. People began to hate their ruler for containing them in such a small place.

One fateful night, the people stormed the ruler's palace with torches in hand, intent on ending the reign of their phantom ruler.The intense heat from the flames was too much for Myria’s power to bear. Myria’s power was just enough to be contained in its “human” shell, but when faced with more heat it became unbearable. Insufferable. Vals entire body shut down at the mercy of this intense heat and was unable to function as Myria fed more and more off the torches.

In order to protect itself Myria had to leave its shell. leaving Mae’s body lifeless behind.Believing that both Myria and Mae had perished, the people of Myrida celebrated their new found freedom but were soon rampaged and mostly killed by a neighboring kingdom. But Myria, weakened yet still alive, was forced to create a new form—a new shell. In its weakened state Myria was able to conquer a new and smaller shell. A “human” baby. Mae Valerius was reborn. But there was a cost. In its weakened state, Myria was able only to create the body, not the memories or the awareness of the power it held. As Mae grew, they lived unaware of the dark power within them. As they grew older they experienced magical happenings unknowing that it was the power of Myria. That was until one day when they became a teenager, the same age they had been “born” as originally… on this day memories came surging in. Val remembered who they truly are. Ever since fragments of Val’s memory are slowing being restored and the true power of Myria is growing once more.
